Understanding social media

Original draft dated andpublished 18th March 2011 - revised 27th April 2011

Which on-line network should you choose?

Facebook - Linked-In - Twitter - Networking in Surrey, and many more

In one way the answer is very simple. Sign up, start tweeting or blogging and wait to see how many people contact you... The place is crowded with online messages and it is too often used as a gossip channel.

Can anyone join your network?

Yes, on paper, it looks good if you have a lot of followers, but beware:
  • Everyone manages their own business and they have their own agenda.
  • They can "add" or "remove" names/links on their followers list and so can you.
  • You need to remember that it is hard work to keep in touch with every one you meet, contact by phone or communicate with on the internet!
  • If they do not like your message or the way you communicate, they will simply ignore you or in extreme cases block your communications. Remember - both Twitter and Facebook have "Agressive Following" terms and conditions and you are limited to the number of people you can follow.
