The last ten years have not been quiet, considering Iraq, Afghanistan, one Tsunami in 2004 and the subsequent earthquakes in L'Aquila (Italy), Haiti and Brazil.
Finance, our flexible friend?
It you are in my age group, you may remember a certain bank used that slogan to advertise their credit card. The financial crisis (2007-2009) has dented our confidence in a big way.. The new coalition government is handing out some bitter medicine to get the economy on the right track. Enough of that. The historians will make up their own mind, when the dust has settled.
Errors and mistakes are corrected, the damage repaired and new ideas begin to flow.
Think positive.
Tragic events, by their nature, make a lasting impression and remind us it pays to be cautious. Good planning and preparation are the foundation of any business, product launch or new service offered.
The seminar held by Sutton Chamber of Commerce during the summer demonstrated that the private sector is ready to address the demand for cleaner and more efficient use of our natural resources.
The new social media tools - word of mouth will travel faster
One of my friends was involved in the launch of a new product by a very well known brand name, just before the DotCom crash. While he attended the launch party and press release, he sensed that the "captains of industry" were uneasy, because the internet favours the flexible approach of the smaller trading companies. The vast majority are small businesses with less than 9 employees and very small wage bills.
Government statistics show that the SME marker has grown by 1.3 miilion since 1998 and most of this increase is more people working from home and avoiding:
- long commuter hours
- lengthy journeys to/from clients/customers
- solving problems through remote access technology and video conferencing.
Disagree with me, please. But I cannot help wondering whether our local High Street will see a revival at the expense of the out-of-town shopping centres.
