Eleonor Roosevelt once said: Do what you feel in your heart to be right- for you'll be criticized anyway. You'll be damned if you do, and damned if you don't.
Left- or right-handed?
Most of us are born with this character trait and do not question it, unless we are faced with unusual circumstances...
In my youth I was confronted by the then headmaster of my primary school in Aerdenhout, Holland. He took exception to my natural tendency to write with my left hand and publicly chastised me in front of my class mates. I was six years old at the time (1961).
With the benefit of hind-sight I recognise this as daft, unreasoned prejudice, but at the time I was not old enough to understand.
My parents noticed the sullen look on my face and had the good sense to take me to one side and coax me into telling them what happened. Shortly after, my father confronted this headmaster and a few days later, the man graciously apologised (again publicly) in front of my contemporaries in year one.
A small mystery. Two years later I joined my local hockey club and enjoyed learning this sport as though I am right handed. I play tennis with my left hand.
What is the point of this story? If I suggested that your guess is as good as mine, it leaves too much to the imagination. The UK is a good place to do business, despite the turmoil caused by the banking crises and economic downturn (2007/9).
